Update: We have recently updated the processing for recurring payments via paypal. The system will now create the recurring profile in paypal and create the recurring profile in a "pending" status. When the IPN from paypal actually takes the payment, the subscription will be updated to "active" state so the user can access info. Unfortunately this seems to be a limitation of paypal. They first create the recurring profile, and whilst doing this, they test that the credit card used is a real one. To perform this test, they debit the users card for $1 and then, upon success, they return the $1. After this, they subtract the first subscription payment and notify your site via IPN. This IPN transmission is what updates the subscription status to active.
