What you can do:
- precisely define where a module is displayed and where not
- define different parameter values for a module, based on where it is shown
- create modules with HTML in their titles
- use environment data in module parameter values
Module visibility and parameter changes could be based on:
- current article
- current category
- current section
- current component
- current menu
- current menu item
- current language
- currently logged user
- the group of the currently logged user
- environment data (POST and GET parameters, session variables, cookies)
- custom PHP script
These conditions could be combined using logical operators - AND, OR and brackets. The combined conditions we call contexts (or sections). You can set module visibility and parameter values based on this contexts.

Example contexts:
- article is “My article” AND user group is “Administrators”
- component is “Polls” and REQUEST parameter (GET or POST) “id” = “5”

Example usage:
- show module only for specific users
- show/hide modules based on language
- display context-based news in a single module
- use a request parameter in a module parameter values
